Surveillance Guidelines
Initial screening colonoscopy for men and women should be for
those aged 50-64.
Colonoscopy surveillance recommendations based on findings at
initial colonoscopy:
a. Normal colonoscopy – next evaluation in 10 years.
b.
Hyperplastic polyps removed – next evaluation in 10 years.
c. Small adenomas (less than 1 cm) – next evaluation in 5 years.
d. More than 4 adenomas – next evaluation in 1-2 years.
e. Large polyps – next evaluation in 1-2 years.
f.
Once no polyps found after a 5 year hiatus then next evaluation
in 10 years.
g.
Family history of first degree relative with colon cancer before
age 60(mother, father, sister, brother), next evaluation every 5
years.
