Hemorrhoid Treatment

Hemorrhoids occur in most people at some point in time. They are veins that occur as a result of straining, constipation, weightlifting, long distance driving, or sitting for any long period of time. Most hemorrhoids that cause itching and bleeding are internal hemorrhoids. As they enlarge, they may prolapse, (or push out of the rectum) feeling like bumps or grapes. Most can be treated conservatively, although laser treatment (IRC) may be helpful if there is ongoing bleeding.

Recommendations:

  • Keep stool soft by using a lot of fiber in the diet, i.e. bran flakes, prunes, grains

  • Get exercise (walking, jogging) at least 3-4 times per week

  • Try Annusol or Preparation H, but if NOT helpful, ask your doctor for a stronger medicated suppository

  • Do not sit on the toilet bowl for longer than 5 minutes

  • Do not strain

  • Use sitz baths 2-3 times per day, with hot water, Epsom salt (1 tablespoon) for 20 minutes
