Surveillance Guidelines

Initial screening colonoscopy for men and women should be for those aged 50-64.

​

Colonoscopy surveillance recommendations based on findings at initial colonoscopy:

  • Normal colonoscopy – next evaluation in 10 years

  • Hyperplastic polyps removed – next evaluation in 10 years

  • Small adenomas (less than 1 cm) – next evaluation in 5 years

  • More than 4 adenomas – next evaluation in 1-2 years

  • Large polyps – next evaluation in 1-2 years

  • Once no polyps found after a 5 year hiatus then next evaluation in 10 years

  • Family history of first degree relative with colon cancer before age 60(mother, father, sister, brother), next evaluation every 5 years
